Finding an Internship can be a daunting task. Here are a few tips to get you started and guide you in the right direction:
- Online search engines such as Indeed and google.
- Use google maps to take a virtual tour of the neighbourhood as you may find more companies this way compared to what will show top of a google search.
- Use social media to make connections.
- Check in with your college lecturers to see if they have any connections in the USA.
- Join a local club and get networking.
- Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your field based in the city you plan on interning in.
- Connect with companies directly.
- Put the word out at work, see if your colleagues have connections.
- Join your college alumni group and connect with others who may have been on the Grad visa previously.
Approaching Employers
Approach employers just like you would if you were applying for a job. The most important part is to make sure your application and your cover letter is about your skills rather than focused solely on the visa. We suggest leaving it short and adding a line such as “ I have the opportunity to intern in the USA for up to 12 months through my sponsorship with (insert sponsor name)”. This makes it clear you do not require sponsorship from the company.
After the initial application, generally you will have a video call or interview with your company and this is when you will most likely be asked about your visa. You can then let the employer know you have your visa and your sponsorship and although they do not have to provide either of these, you would be required to have them complete your Training Plan prior to beginning your internship.
If this is your employers first time taking on an intern through the program it is nice to suggest you can set some time aside to go through and fill this in together. Be sure to read our guide explaining your DS7002 Training plan.
