Modified on Fri, 11 Apr at 8:55 PM

If you do not already have a Social Security number, you will have to apply for one in order to get paid, open a bank account, and pay taxes. It is legal for you to begin your employment before a Social Security number has been issued, but you must have a receipt of application to show that you have applied.

To apply, visit the nearest Social Security office 5 business days after you register for SEVIS and bring the following documents with you:

  • DS-2019.
  • Passport and J-1 visa.
  • I-94 number (optional but recommended)  to get this  follow this link:  I94 - Official Website (dhs.gov) . From there, click on the ‘Get most recent I-94’ tab, agree to the terms and enter the information required. This is your entry record to the USA so can be retrieved 24 hrs after you enter the USA.
  • Letter to Social Security officer (optional but recommended). You can obtain this from your US Sponsor application.
  • Time-saving tip: You can complete the application form (SS-5 Application for a Social Security Card) in advance to save time: Application for Social Security Card (ssa.gov)
