Driving in the USA

Driving in the USA is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

If you are going to be driving in the USA then you should apply for a drivers license for the State you are residing in – there is information about this on the DMV website. The rules and regulations are different for every State.

Renting a car:

  • You will need to be 21 years old to rent a car. There is usually also an underage fee if you are under the age of 25.
  • You will also need to have your full license in order to rent & drive a car.

Buying a car:

  • Weigh up the costs of buying and maintaining a car as opposed to renting.
  • Rules vary for States – do your research and check out the DMV for the State you are in.

Insurance is compulsory through either the rental car company or an insurance company in the USA if buying.

Hitchhiking – just DON’T do it.
